The Orvil Jack Extension: Where Chemistry Creates Rarity

True green turquoise is a geological anomaly. Deep within the Nevada earth, the Cortez Canyon deposit—an extension of the legendary Orvil Jack mine—produces some of the most vibrant and sought-after lime and forest-green gem material in the world.

Unlike standard turquoise deposits dominated exclusively by high copper, our specific vein is characterized by a rare elemental shift. We don’t just claim our stones are unique; we look to the science to understand why.

XRF Analysis: Unlocking Elemental Clues

To better understand the natural composition of our material, we sample our rough using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) detection, a method used by geologists to determine the elemental makeup of a rock without destroying the sample. An XRF device releases powerful X-rays, disrupting the electrons in an element and causing the atoms to release secondary fluorescent rays with a known amount of energy unique to each atom. The device reads these tiny releases of energy and produces an estimated percentage to report the measured quantity of each element.

While XRF data is widely used in field geology and mineral exploration, it is important to note that it only scans the surface of a sample and has a margin for error. XRF guns are highly accurate with heavier minerals (such as Fe, Cu, and Pb) but can struggle to differentiate lighter elements like Aluminum and Phosphorus. For this reason, our analysis focuses specifically on the trends found in Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), and Iron (Fe) to understand our unique turquoise.

Forged in the Nevada Earth

By sampling different shades of Cortez Canyon Turquoise, several clear elemental trends emerge:

  • Iron (Fe) – The Green Chromophore: Turquoise is a hydrated aluminum phosphate mineral. During its deposition, Fe-rich hydrothermal fluids can cause Iron to replace Aluminum in the mineral, creating a richer, greener color in the stone. Our scans revealed a clear positive correlation between the presence of Iron and the occurrence of darker, more forest green turquoise, with Iron topping out at a startling 9% of the total composition in some locations.

  • Copper (Cu) – The Turquoise Confirmation: Copper and Aluminum contribute to the classic blue color of turquoise. Our scans showed a significant increase in Copper in the samples that were a stronger, traditional blue hue. Importantly, Copper is present across all of our samples. This confirms our material’s place in the turquoise family and distinguishes our minty green turquoise from variscite, an aluminum phosphate cousin which does not contain any copper.

  • Zinc (Zn) – The Faustite Tendency: Zinc mirrors the trendline of Copper in our deposit, but in smaller doses. The presence of Zinc suggests the exciting presence of some faustite—a minty green turquoise where Zinc enters the system and replaces Copper. While true faustite is often characterized by having about 4x more Zinc than Copper, our Copper levels remain at least twice as abundant as Zinc (and up to 5x more abundant in some spots). This showcases a rare, dynamic blend where Zinc and Copper coexist to create our signature electric hues.

We operate strictly as mine owners and raw material suppliers, not commercial jewelers. Every piece of gem material we offer is harvested by our own hands directly from the host rock.

Because we believe in complete transparency and honoring the natural integrity of the earth, we do not stabilize, dye, or alter our material with resins, nor do we cut standard calibrated cabochons. We exclusively offer the raw stone exactly as it was formed:
